What/Where is Personville?

More about Personville from the Online Handbook of Texas. It’s located in central Texas close to Waco.

I’ll be going to Dallas for the annual Tejas Storytelling Festival, so I might be able to stop by Personville (or at least what’s left of it) and take photos.

By sheer coincidence, Dashiell Hammett’s first novel was originally named Personville. The title was later changed to Red Harvest; Here’s a quotation:

Personville, or Poisonville, is an ugly city of forty thousand people, set in an ugly notch between two ugly mountains that had been all dirtied up by mining. Spread over this was a grimy sky that looked as if it had come out of smelters’ stacks.”

Actually Hammett had never heard of the Texas Personville; it was something he just made up. That’s probably for the best.

Wow, here’s a satellite map for Personville. Don’t laugh, Personville is located at the intersection of State highways 164 and 39 (pictured below), twelve miles southeast of Groesbeck in southeastern Limestone County).  In this one photo you are seeing Personville in all its majesty.

Here’s a larger closeup of the same photo. If you’re curious, here are current weather condition in Personville. Sounds like a really happening place.

Personville Story Network Podcast Coming Early March!

This podcast will begin in early May, with approximately one episode a week.

Check out this PDF describing content/structure and format guidelines for the Personville Story Network Podcast. (written last year and used the name Imaginary Planet Podcast, but still generally correct).
Also, check out my article about literary podcasting.

More information about the Personville Story Network Podcast (very general):

  • one story a week
  • about 2/3 will be original stories; 1/3 will be dramatized telling of public domain stories.
  • About 1/3 of the stories will be short stories (the kind you find in a magazine); 1/3 will be live performances; 1/3 will be original poetry
  • not against genre fiction per se, but not big fan of it either. Probably an important quality is that the story have an “oral quality,” though I don’t expect storytellers to be super polished performers.
  • About 2/3 will be Texas storytellers (not out of any conscious design, simply that I know more writers/storytellers in my homestate than elsewhere).
  • In fact I will remain flexible about format and subject matter; I will contribute some stories, but most of the stories will be by other people.
  • Generally, podcast content will be Creative Commons By-NC (or some equivalent license).
